Stability of the Heaviest Nuclei

چکیده
Spontaneous–fission half–lives (T SF 1/2 ) of the heaviest even–even nuclei are evaluated and compared with their alpha–decay mode. Calculations of T SF 1/2 are performed in the dynamical way with potential energy obtained by the macroscopic–microscopic method and the inertia tensor obtained by the cranking approximation. The alpha– decay half–lives (Tα 1/2) are calculated for the same region of nuclei by use of the Viola and Seaborg formula. The ground–state properties such as mean square radii and electric quadrupole moments are also studied. From the analysis of T SF 1/2 it is found that a peninsula of deformed metastable superheavy nuclei near 268 106Sg162 is separated from an island of the spherical superheavy, around the doubly magic nucleus 114184, by a trench in the vicinity of neutron number N=170. PACS numbers: 25.85.Ca, 23.60.+e, 27.90.+b

The structure of nuclei that lie at the edges of stability in the nuclear landscape hold the most discovery potential for new physics. While nuclei along the proton and neutron drip-lines reveal stellar nucleosynthesis pathways, very heavy high-Z nuclei, whose fragility stems from enhanced Coulomb repulsion, lead us towards superheavy physics. The island of superheavy nuclei predicted to lie at...
متن کاملThe effects of isomerism and side chain mutation on binding energy and NMR/NQR tensors of L-methionylasparagine and L-asparagylmethionine
Density functional theory methods(DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis were used to investigate the effects of isomerism and side chain mutation at a microscopic level on the stability, binding energy and NMR/NQR tensors of structural isomers, L- methionylasparagine (Met-Asn) and L- asparagylmethionine (Asn-Met) in the gas phase. The results represented that the isomerism and side chain...
متن کاملExploring the island of superheavy elements
Over the last thirty years, experimentalists have, so to speak, launched an expedition to explore the predicted “island of superheavy elements”—a region of increasingly stable nuclei around atomic number 114 (Fig. 1). So far they have reported, on average, the discovery of one new element every two and a half years. Now, a Russian-American collaboration headed by Yuri Oganessian at the Joint In...
متن کاملFavored configurations for four-quasiparticle K isomerism in the heaviest nuclei
Configuration-constrained potential-energy-surface calculations are performed including β6 deformation to investigate high-K isomeric states in nuclei around 254No and 270Ds, the heaviest nuclei where there have been some observations of two-quasiparticle isomers, while data for four-quasiparticle isomers are scarce. We predict the prevalent occurrence of four-quasiparticle isomeric states in t...

The knowledge of nuclear reaction rates is important for studying energy production and nucleosynthesis, especially in reactions including nuclei far from stability line, which are not accessible experimentally so far and thus it is necessary to be able to predict reaction cross sections in low excitation energies. Nuclear level density is one of the important key quantities in many nuclear phy...
